On Sunday 10th Nov 2013, we will be doing our first 'Audax' event, hopefully completing
the 162 km, (100 mile) route of 'The Cheshire Safari'.
Seven of us will be competing, with Peter Dowd aiming to loose his 'Century' cherry.

Wish us luck!

Vets First Ever Century Ride

Saturday 26th Septmember 2013 saw the Vets complete their first ever century ride.

The ride began & ended in the very picturesque Borders village of Paxton & was based on the Kelso Loop, one of four rides looping around the Scottish Borders. Wonderful riding country - if you've never been - GO!

8 o'clock saw a rather misty start to the ride, the stillness a good omen of the outstanding weather that was to come - dry, plenty of sun & light winds.

First stop Eyemouth for a picture.

Then into the hills near to the coast, fantastic scenery.

First pit stop, The Square at Duns, a third completed.
Could have been France!

Well on our way now, Hume Castle - not the first & wouldn't be the last castle we passed during the day.

100 miles completed,  7hours & 3 minutes of cycling, Union Bridge, Horncliffe.
We are all stood bang on the centre of the Border.

And then there was beer.........................
(The Cross Inn, Paxton, Great Food, Great Beer)

Sunday 18th August 2013 - a ride to Holme Moss summit

We think the boys in next year's Tour de France may go up a tad quicker than us!

Nice view once you get there though!

The climb to Holme Moss Summit was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done on a bike. It would appear I'm not too popular with the rest of the group after sorting the ride-out today! (As if I care)!

Thursday 15 August 2013

This is the route for Sunday 18th August 2013.
Ascent of the Isle of Skye road, followed by the ascent up to the mast at Holme, (another part of next year's Tour de France).
Depart Grotton Co-op 8.45 am.

Sunday 11 August 2013

Today saw the group out on their customary Sunday run.
Tough one today, 41 miles with just under 3000ft of ascent.
Including Cragg Vale.
We may have gone up a tad slower than what they will be going up in next years Tour de France.

Welcome to Springhead Veterans Cycling Club, (SVCC)

Hello & welcome to our blog.
We are (currently) a group of 7 ex-footballers who have now taken to riding our bikes around the many hills around the Southern Pennines.
We do actually still have a game of football weekly, playing for Springhead FC Veterans in sunny Oldham, (hence our name).
In May this year, we completed a Coast to Coast cycle ride, from Ayr on Scotland's west coast, across to Berwick upon Tweed on England's east coast, racking up 175 miles in three days.

Tomorrow (Sunday 11th August 2013) I have a nice little route planned for the boys:
